The video above popped up in my Google news feed left me momentarily puzzled. It was about a Tesla robot “attacking a worker”, but as far as I knew, Tesla didn’t utilize its own robots in production; it used the same ones as other major auto manufacturers. Right off the bat, the story screamed clickbait. A more factual headline would’ve been ‘Auto worker injured due to improper lockout procedure,’ but I suppose that lacks the thrill factor. The video accompanying the article even quipped, ‘You can’t make this stuff up,’ while ironically fabricating the narrative. The truth is, the whole situation was more akin to someone leaving a saw on and getting injured while working on it and then reporting that the saw attacked the worker.

I was, however, pleased to see that the comment section wasn’t swayed by the outright sensationalism. Readers swiftly called out the news source for its exaggerative reporting. This was obviously a strategic move by the news outlet; They couldn’t miss the opportunity to combine ‘Tesla’ and ‘robot attack’ in one headline.

“Truly shameful of the media to dredge up an injury from two years ago due to a simple industrial Kuka robot arm (found in all factories) and imply that it is due to Optimus now,” Musk wrote in an X post on Wednesday. -Elon Musk

Amid the genuine concerns surrounding AI and technology, such exaggerated fear-mongering comes off as simply irresponsible.

I’m hopeful that the public reaction to such reporting will prompt greater journalistic integrity. It might be wishful thinking, but it’s a hope worth clinging to.

As a tech company deeply involved in AI development, with multiple projects ourselves, we strive to stay informed and ahead of the curve with AI technologies. We’re all navigating this uncharted territory of AI, unsure of where it’ll lead us. It could usher in a utopian future, or it could lead to a Terminator movie scenario. But if history has taught us anything, it’s that humanity generally excels in harnessing technology. We’ve seen the evolution of nuclear energy, from a horrendous weapon of war to one of the safest and most regulated technologies that exist today. I believe AI will follow a similar path. We might stumble, but ultimately, I think we will harness AI to improve human life.

So, whether AI leads us to a utopian world or a dystopian version like Mad Max remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: news outlets that borders more on fiction than fact and misrepresenting facts do a disservice to journalism It’s essential that we support responsible reporting, especially in an era where the distinction between reality and science fiction is increasingly hard to detect.
